Intro to Poetry Reading and Writing

Intro to Poetry Reading and Writing is for artists who are non-poets and for non-professional poets. More specifically, this course was created to address and deconstruct the rumors that poetry sucks and is hard, and to speak to decolonized ways of knowing and tapping into emotions. In-class writing projects and opportunities for group feedback throughout the course allows participants to hone their artistry, craft, and analytic thinking skills. The core reading list will engage exclusively with BIPOC poets, including Douglas Kearney, Layli Long Soldier, Ada Limón and more.

Research Based Practice for Creative Writers

Why would poets do research? What does that even mean? Whether you hold archival practice interests, or are cross-disciplinary in film, video, writing, poetry, or nonfiction, these biweekly sessions are designed to develop new individualized research processes. Inspired by ideas from documentary poets, these processes can support artists from a variety of disciplines. Develop a new project while engaging in group readings and feedback sessions.

Befriending Conflict: Mindfulness of Violence

This workshop is inspired by Sarah Schulman's book Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair.

This course empowers victims of violence to cross the threshold of conflict through mindfulness practice, somatic practice, and self empowerment, while deterring the violence of the state from stemming into our social lives. Drawing from Black anarchist positions and Black militants like Malcolm X, we will face conflict avoidance in interpersonal relations through guided weekly meditations, group readings, and Q&A’s.

Mindfulness of Body for Trans Bodies

Through this workshop, we will develop wellness practices based on getting into the body, specifically for a body that is in flux, or has gone through flux, one that other people don't understand.

The practices learned in this workshop will encourage participants in healing dissociation from the body. This workshop asks participants to complete somatic practice, light gentle yoga postures, and seated meditations.

Decolonizing Your Creative Voice

Language carries violence. How do writers, coming from all professions, develop an ethic in language’s teaching, construction, and connotation?

Inspired by June Jordan’s essay “Nobody Mean More to Me than You and the Future Life of Willie Jordan”, this workshop focuses on reclaiming authenticity, moving away from white cultural ideas of legibility, and towards the power of Black English through in-class prompts, group readings of poetry and theory, and super fun group discussions.
